Fire resistance refers to the ability of a wall, floor or ceiling system to serve as a barrier to flame and confine it to the originating area.
Spread of fire from one area to another can occur due to:
- Collapse of a barrier
- Opening in a barrier that allow passage of flame or hot gases.
- Head conduction through an assembly that exceeds specified
limits.
Partition assemblies must be able to remain standing and contain or slow the spread of flame, smoke and heat for a sufficient length of time so that occupants are able to evacuate the building or retreat to a more secure location to await the arrival of rescue crews in relative safety. Hotels, schools, hospitals and other facilities with large or special-needs populations require partitions with especially high ratings due to the extended time occupants may require to evacuate.
